Culture and civilisation of the Hispanic world

Synopsis: This subject studies Spain from 200 AD to the present day and Latin America from 1492. Lectures will survey major social, political and cultural developments of the main historic periods. Tutorial work focusses on specific textual and audiovisual material: cultural documents, literary text and films. The main goals are: (1) to study the different situations that allowed Spain to become the first world empire in the 16th century; (2) to present a coherent and balanced account of the social and cultural realities of the Spanish-speaking countries of the world in the 20th century.

Assessment: Oral presentation: 10% + Essay (1500 words): 30% + Class tests 30% + Examinations (2 hours): 30%
