Synopsis: This subject identifies the major political and social developments in the former Soviet Union and the contemporary Russian Federation from 1985 to the present and to seek patterns of continuity and contradiction and departure within them. The teaching matter is divided into sections focusing on the Gorbachev period, institutions, civil society, visions of Russia, national identity and social problems.

Assessment: Essay (3000 words): 50% + A take-home exam (equivalent to 3000 words): 50%
