Synopsis: Major political and social developments in the former Soviet Union and the contemporary Russian Federation from 1985 to the present. The Gorbachev period, institutions, civil society, visions of Russia, national identity and social problems. Russia0s present difficulties as a consequence of its history. Russia0s problems a result of its communist past. Features in common with other countries that have attempted transitions from authoritarian or totalitarian rule.

Assessment: Essay (3000 words): 50% + Take-home exam (equivalent of 3000 words): 50%.
