Synopsis: Advanced study of control and integration of body systems in daily activity. Commences with study of historical development of concepts of homeostasis and integration. Then, study of control of body systems examines three areas : (a) control of fuel metabolism, and variations during circadian rhythms, (b) molecular and cellular control of development from embryo to early post-natal life, (c) control of adult growth and ageing. Study of integration in body systems examines (a) mechanisms maintaining stability of fluids and ions, (b) integrated cardiovascular regulation by nerves and hormones, and (c) respiratory integration, normally and in special conditions (eg., sleep, diving).
Assessment: Mid-semester multiple-choice question test (1 hour): 10% + Practical book: 5% + Written practical examination (2 hours): 20% + Written theory examination (3 hours): 65%
