Synopsis: This subject furthers the student's knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes, and the related design for production issues with particular reference to their application in product design. The focus is on high levels of production and includes the following. Metals: workshop processes, welding and fabricating, metal casting, machining, die casting, forming, rolling, power metallurgy, extrusion methods, and finishes. Plastics: an introduction to polymer processing, with lecture on compressiona nd injection moulding, rotational moulding, vacuum forming, glass reinforced composites, assembly and fabrication techniques, including sonic welding and the use of adhesives.
