Synopsis: What is heritage and why do we value it? The meanings of heritage and its significance in European and Aboriginal Australia, the United States, Europe and South-East Asia. Issues include the relationship between the search for roots and cultural tourism, /authenticity0 in the preservation of historic sites and buildings, /reliving the past0 through history museums and theme parks and the ethical and political tensions between preservation and economic use.

Assessment: Class paper and presentation (1000 words): 20% + Fieldwork report (1000 words): 20% + Heritage analysis and writing project (2000 words): 40% + Class test (1 hour): 20%
