Synopsis: Representations of teachers and teaching. Values, expectations and images of teaching formed by personal experience. The role of media and text in social views of the teacher. The roles of teachers in modern society, especially Australia. The social status of teachers; the formation, growth and regulation of teachers; their relationship to the state and different employers; gender relations in teaching; and teachers' membership of and participation in school and education communities

Assessment: Clayton (participation in workshops, 10%, interview/report, 10%, essay of 1800 words, 40%): 100% + Gippsland (essay (film critique) 40%, field work/interviews, 20%, personal reflections/journal, 40%): 100%
