General information

The Diploma of Engineering (Industrial Management) is a two-year equivalent full-time course by distance education providing training and education in basic business and industrial management procedures. It also gives the option of studies in basic engineering subjects. The course provides good supervision/management education for people working in such positions as technical officers, engineering assistants, and engineering and industrial supervisors. It is a very useful course for people wanting to advance into supervisory or management positions.
The course is designed for part-time study, causing minimum interference to employment by use of distance education options with weekend schools.

Entry requirements

(a) Mature-age entry: People with an appropriate employment background who are over twenty-three years of age may gain entry as mature age students under the alternative category entry outlined in the admission section.
(b) Year 12 entry: The normal academic requirement for entry is successful completion of a Year 12 course of study, preferably including a pass in English. (Students wanting to do the technical module preferably should have passed mathematics and a science subject at Year 11.)
(c) Satisfy tertiary entry requirements as outlined in the book under 'Entry requirements'.
(d) Applicants will not normally be accepted directly from Year 12 studies unless they are employed in industry.

Students will need access to an IBM-compatible computer.

Attendance

One weekend school per semester for engineering subjects. Subjects offered by other schools may require more. (Please refer to the 'Table of subjects' for details.)

Course structure

The course consists of five modules from which a student must pass modules one, two and five and either module three or four. Students should normally complete modules one and two before doing the other modules. Subjects from several modules may be studied at the same time. Not all subjects are offered each year.
Well motivated students can reasonably undertake twenty-four credit points per year, thus permitting completion of the course by four years distance education study.

Note

1 Students seeking articulation to the Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Engineering Studies are advised to take module four.
2 GEG5012 is a prerequisite for GEG5004, and GCO1831 is a prerequisite for GEG6004.

and other business subjects approved by the head of the Gippsland School of Engineering for use as electives.

Technical

GEG5124 Drawing and design (6 points)

Approved subjects from level one or level two of the Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Engineering Studies courses if prerequisites are met.

Assessment

This varies from subject to subject but is usually a combination of assignments and examinations.

Credits/exemptions

Applicants with appropriate engineering or industrial qualifications may obtain up to a maximum credit of forty-eight credit points. Also, applicants who have undergone formal employer conducted industrial training may be eligible for credit of up to thirty-six credit points. Application for credits/exemptions should be made on the application for credit transfer form and forwarded with the application for admission form at the time of application, along with legally certified copies of qualifications and statements of results.
