Introduction to psychoanalytic theory

8 points - Second semester - Two 1-hour lectures and one 2-hour workshop per week - Caulfield - Prerequisites: completed first year of any degree.

Objectives On the completion of this subject students will be able to critically evaluate the assumptions of the psychoanalytic theories of Freud, Jung, Adler and Horney and understand the reasons for developments in contemporary psychoanalytic theory, eg object relations theory and archetypal theory; compare the training, techniques and tools of analysts with those of psychologists and to understand the functions of transference, counter transference and dream analysis during the process of analysis; to examine the role of symbols in mythology and fairytales; compare personality typology classifications provided by psychoanalytic theorists and evaluate psychological tests and tools associated with psychoanalytic theory.

Synopsis Central theme: Origins, applications, techniques and evaluation of analytical psychology. The origins of classical and contemporary theories of psychoanalytic thought will be examined and compared. Techniques associated with analysis, eg transference and dream analysis as well as a range of psychological tests and tools will also be examined and evaluated.

Assessment One 2-hour examination: 45% - One 2000-word essay: 35% - One tutorial presentation: 25%
