6 points - Three 1-hour lectures and a 2-hour laboratory class per week - Second semester - Berwick, Caulfield/Peninsula, Clayton and Gippsland - Distance students must complete a minimum of 12 hours on-campus weekend school laboratory work - Prohibitions: WEL1320, WEL1340, BHS1320, BHS1340 and any first-level psychology subjects taught at Monash University prior to 1998.

Objectives On the completion of this subject students will have acquired an understanding of basic cognitive processes; will have achieved an appreciation of the social basis of behaviour, and selected aspects of abnormal psychology; will have an understanding of research methodology and statistical analysis; and will have further developed their skills in report writing.

Synopsis This subject continues the general introduction to the discipline of psychology. The topics covered include descriptive statistics and an introduction to inferential statistics, basic processes and principles of cognition, and abnormal and social psychology. Laboratory classes are designed to enhance students' understanding of the lecture material, while providing further training in research techniques.

Assessment Two laboratory reports (1500 words each): 30% - Two statistics assignments (500 words each): 20% - Examination (3 hours, multiple-choice): 50%
