48 points - Full-year subject, comprising formal class contact and private study - Clayton - Prerequisites: Third-year physics subjects including the compulsory units 'Electromagnetism', 'Statistical mechanics', 'Quantum mechanics', 'Applications of quantum mechanics', 'Nuclear physics' and 'Solid state physics'

Synopsis At least eight units are to be taken, with 'Quantum mechanics', 'Quantum field theory', 'Solid state physics' and 'Statistical mechanics' being compulsory. Students are required to complete a research project involving some original work on a topic chosen in consultation with their supervisor.

Assessment Examinations (normally 8x2 hours): 50% - Theoretical project: 50%
