Objectives On the completion of this subject students will have achieved an advanced understanding and knowledge of immunology; acquired skills in the organisation and performance of research, employing a rigorous scientific approach; demonstrated an ability to use modern techniques in immunology; used modern instruments; developed a critical appraisal of the literature and evaluation of data through active participation in tutorials; developed communication skills in the presentation of a number of seminars to the department during the year; developed writing skills in the preparation of literature reviews and a scientific thesis.

Synopsis The subject is designed to give students advanced understanding and knowledge of immunology and to educate them in organisation and performance of research, employing a rigorous scientific approach. The major emphasis of the year is a research project in molecular immunology, immunobiology, immunopathology or clinical immunology. Use and understanding of modern techniques and instruments is encouraged. A program of lectures and seminars includes instruction in critical appraisal of the literature and evaluation of data. Students will also develop communication skills through oral presentation and writing a thesis.

Assessment The major assessment is based on written and oral reports on the research project. There is a mid-year formal written examination. Successful students may apply to proceed to a higher degree in immunology.
