Chemical analysis and chromatography

4 points - Two 1-hour lectures and one 2-hour laboratory per week - Second semester - Gippsland/Distance - Prerequisite: CHM1022 - Prohibitions: GAS2281, GAS2282 - Note: Distance education students will be required to attend a compulsory 3-day laboratory school.

Objectives On satisfactory completion of this subject students will be able to understand the theory of separation of compounds by chromatographic methods; apply theoretical principles to suggest suitable techniques and conditions to separate mixtures; separate simple mixtures using thin layer chromatography and GC and HPLC instruments; understand the importance and principles of representative sampling techniques; apply the principles of chemistry to traditional analytical techniques in chemical analysis; be able to analyse for specific compounds using these techniques and will demonstrate skill and confidence in chemical measurements and calculations associated with the above areas.

Synopsis This subject is designed to enable the intending chemist or analytical scientist to understand and apply basic principles of chemistry to the separation and analysis of materials. The course will cover sampling techniques; theories of chromatographic separation; thin layer, gas and liquid chromatography; HPLC and GC instrumental methods; gravimetric, titrimetric and electrometric techniques and spectrometric and FIA methods of analysis. The subject will be taught by lectures and experimental/discussion sessions. Some programmed learning material is available. The teaching approach will place strong emphasis on relating theoretical concepts to practical applications and the practical work and demonstrations constitute an integral part of the subject and will expose students to the techniques listed.

Assessment Examination: 50% - Assignment: 20% - Six practical reports throughout the semester: 30% - A pass in both theory and practical work is mandatory to pass the subject.
