48 points - Clayton - Prerequisites: A credit level average in a 24-point BIO, BOT or ZOO third-year sequence

Objectives On the completion of this subject students should have developed a critical objective approach to experimental design, data acquisition and the evaluation of scientific data; developed the technical skills appropriate to a specific field of biological research; developed the ability to communicate scientific information in the form of written reports and oral presentations; gained an understanding of the ethical principles required for conducting scientific research; obtained experience in the use of modern scientific information retrieval systems; gained a broader overview of the biological sciences than obtained from specialised undergraduate studies.

Synopsis Students with a good academic record and at least a credit average in a twenty-four-point BIO, BOT or ZOO third-year sequence (including research methods unit) may apply to enrol in an honours year. Students undertake supervised research, present research seminars, participate in discussion groups, and submit an essay on an advanced topic in biology. Special programs may be included to meet the needs of individual students. Candidates may commence the honours year at the beginning of either semester. Further information is available from the course coordinator and at meetings held with prospective students during second semester of third year.
