BIO1022

Biology

Associate Professor Gordon Sanson and Dr Jenny Read

6 points - Three 1-hour lectures and one 3-hour practical - Second semester - Clayton - Prerequisite: BIO1011 - Prohibitions: GAS1185, GAS1186

Objectives On completion of this subject students will understand biological processes ranging from molecular genetics and microbiology to the biochemistry and physiology of animal organ systems as a basis for further study in biological and biomedical disciplines; develop skills in designing and undertaking a scientific project; develop skills in writing scientific reports; further develop skills in library research, in a critical approach to scientific methods, in using basic laboratory equipment, and in data evaluation and presentation.

Synopsis This subject follows BIO1011, studying the biology of whole organisms, organ systems and cells, including molecular genetics, and the effect of environmental parameters on biological functions. The biology of microbes and animals is emphasised in this subject. Ecological factors that are biologically important at the level of whole organisms and at cellular, subcellular, and biochemical levels are considered for each organ system under study. The practical section continues what has been introduced in BIO1011, stressing an experimental approach to the study of biological organisation.

Assessment Examination (2.5 hours): 40% - Practical work: 30% - Essay:10% - Mini quizzes: 20%
