The Master of Nursing course may be undertaken by research only (thesis), by a
combination of minor thesis and coursework, by a combination of research
project and coursework, or by coursework only. The course may be undertaken by
on-campus study, via distance education, or by mixed mode (ie a combination of
on-campus and distance education modes). Students should seek advice in
constructing their individual program of study from the relevant course
coordinator. The course is offered full-time over two years or part-time over
four years. It is available via distance education or mixed mode at Gippsland,
on-campus or mixed mode at Peninsula, and MMC, Clayton campus.
The
course aims to prepare nurses for advanced nursing practice in order to
contribute to the health of individuals, families and communities and to the
development of the profession.
On
completion of the course, students are expected to:
- employ critical thinking to analyse, synthesise and evaluate complex
nursing issues and problems;
- extend practice boundaries in accordance with needs for nursing care;
- propose creative approaches to solving direct and indirect health
related problems;
- demonstrate an ability to plan and conduct research in nursing;
- initiate, manage and sustain changes which affect health outcomes;
- evaluate the interaction between care delivery systems and health
outcomes;
- provide professional leadership through participation and influence in
health and social policy processes.
- investigate health related issues in order to contribute to the
development of nursing science;
- utilise research to inform nursing practice;
- contribute to nursing science through scholarly debate, presentation and
nursing publications.
To
be eligible for admission to candidature a person must:
- have a Bachelor of Nursing or equivalent (with a high level of
achievement such as distinction or honours);
- have two years relevant professional experience;
- relevant registration (eg Division 1 with the Nurses Board of
Victoria)
Satisfactory
completion of ninety-six credit points of study. This may be achieved by
research only (thesis) or through a combination of subjects, and minor thesis,
or project, or coursework only. A maximum of forty-eight credit points may be
granted towards the course on the basis of previous equivalent graduate study.
Students
are encouraged to discuss a range of options which may be undertaken in order
to fulfil the requirements for the award with the relevant course coordinator.
In order to provide flexibility, subjects may also be selected from graduate
