Objectives On completion of the subject it is expected that students will be able to demonstrate a knowledge of key sociological concepts relevant to the practice and profession of nursing; understand the social context of nursing and health care; describe the influence of social factors on health and illness; critically appreciate the inequalities in health status among various groups in contemporary Australian society.
Synopsis This subject introduces sociology as a discipline and its relevance and application to the practice and the profession of nursing. The subject includes the identification and critical analysis of the social basis of health, illness and health care within Australian society. The practice of nursing is a social activity and studies in sociology equip students to develop an appreciation of the role of nursing in both the provision of health care and the broader social responsibilities associated with being a professional. In addition, studies in the sociology of health and illness provide students with an awareness of the relationship between the ways in which people live and organise society and the health status of the population.
