Objectives The objectives on completion are that students should be familiar with different ways of conceptualising knowledge. They should also be able to design a research project, choose research methods appropriate to their research question, write a proposal, including an ethics committee proposal, and defend their methodological approach/es. These aspects will be further developed in MGA0013.

Synopsis The subject includes the following topics: introduction; knowledge of the nature of inquiry; investigation or exploration; research design; surveys and questionnaires; scaling; qualitative research: choice of paradigms; naturalistic inquiry: an overview of methods; qualitative research applied to the health field; gathering and analysing data: the in-depth interview; analysing data: group processes; ethics in research, and the writing of ethics committee proposals; writing a research proposal; and review and evaluation. The above will include discussions on the reflective and reflexive researcher, and will explore epistemological debates in research.

Assessment Written research proposal, including an ethics committee proposal where applicable: 40% · Written critique and defence of the above research proposal: 60%
