Design of aircraft structures

J Burt

4 points · 24 lecture hours and 24 tutorial hours · Second semester · Caulfield · Prerequisites: TEC2911 · Corequisites: TEC2942

Objectives Students are expected to acquire an understanding of the types of structural components used in aircraft and knowledge of the factors influencing the integrity of these components.

Synopsis Topics covered are aircraft structures and types, their design and applications, eg ribs, frames, bulkheads, shearwebs, cutouts, and struts; aircraft construction techniques; aircraft configuration, components and layout; aircraft loads and load calculations including torsion and warping of open and closed sections, and shear lag of panels. Design case study involving a major design assignment. Particular emphasis will be placed on the importance of integrity and maintenance of the structural element during the design process.

Assessment Examination (2 hours): 50% · Assignments 20% · Major design assignment 30%
