Objectives Students are expected to acquire a basic understanding of structural mechanics as it relates to the integrity of structural elements.
Synopsis Topics covered will include equilibrium conditions; introduction to structural elements such as trusses and frames; definitions of stress and strain; introduction to methods used to analyse structural members under tension, bending, torsion, shear and buckling; an introduction to combined stresses which includes the Mohr stress circle and static theories of failure; and an introduction to fatigue, stress concentration, the S-N curve and combined loads.
