4 points · 24 lectures, 24 laboratory and tutorial hours · First semester · Caulfield · Prohibited combinations: TEC2235, TEC2236

Objectives To provide the basic knowledge of the structure properties of the main metallic and ceramic alloy systems, polymeric, and composite materials with a view to provide an insight into the process of materials selection and its relationship to manufacturing processing.

Synopsis Basic structure of materials, thermoplastics, thermosets, composites, foams and timber and the effect of structure on properties for manufacturing characteristics. Comparison of materials groups. Metals: microstructure, physical and mechanical properties of main base metals and some key alloys and their relation to manufacturing. Materials selection processes related to manufacturing.
