Objectives To understand the main metallic and ceramic alloy systems; how they are strengthened and where they are used in manufacturing, together with their failure mechanisms.
Synopsis An overview of the main physical and manufacturing characteristics of materials; response to heat, deformation and cutting; joining approaches. A comparison of materials groups: metals, plastics and rubber, ceramics and glass, timber and timber products. Other building materials: concrete and stone. Metals: an outline of microstructure, the physical and mechanical properties of the main base metals and some key alloys and their relation to manufacturing.
Assessment Examination (2 hours): 70% · Coursework and laboratory work: 30%
