4 points · 22 lecture hours and 18 tutorial/laboratory hours · First or second semester · Clayton · Prerequisites: MAT1920 or ENG1902 and ENG1101

Objectives To (a) develop a basic understanding of the fundamental laws of thermodynamics and a knowledge of components of energy conversion systems, (b) develop an understanding of the concept of a system and control volume and (c) become competent in the application of the laws of thermodynamics to analyse engineering systems with energy conversion.

Synopsis Topics covered include energy, first and second law of thermodynamics, properties and state of substances, control volume and control mass energy analysis, steady flow systems, characteristics of thermodynamic systems, thermodynamics of non-reacting mixtures, thermodynamics of reacting mixtures.

Assessment Examination (2 hours): 70% · Test: 20% · Laboratory work: 10%
