Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have gained knowledge and understanding of the implications of a 'lifelong learning' approach; adumbrate the outcomes of this approach; and draw out the implications of these outcomes for their own philosophy and practice in schools and education institutions more broadly.

Synopsis Across the world a number of trends in economic and social change have highlighted the need for policy-makers and educators to reconsider their approach to education. In a context of enormous economic, social and political change, policy-makers and educators across the world are focusing their attention on the subject of lifelong learning, not only for enhancement of vocational education and training but also for personal growth and democratic participation. In this subject students will examine the economic and social changes which have provided a strong rationale for a lifelong approach to learning, through formal, non-formal and alternative education pathways of all kinds.

Assessment Seminar presentation and assignment (5000 words for MEd students, 8000 words for EdD students): 100%
