Advanced English for professional practice in teaching English as a foreign language

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have developed their English communicative competence in all four macroskills in general English, English for advanced professionals (EAP) and English for teaching in a range of educational settings, with an emphasis on the productive skills, namely, speaking and writing. They should have gained an understanding of the demands of various genres, and enhanced their knowledge and use of English that is appropriate for a range of sociocultural interactions. They should also have developed their proficiency in professional discourse, and engaged in critical reflection on the effectiveness of the strategies, approaches to teaching and learning, and the materials they are exposed to during this subject.

Synopsis The language focus of this subject reflects the specific needs of student groups who will be exposed to a variety of authentic (real world) language use relevant for the student group (eg language of commerce, early childhood teaching, vocational language teaching, instruction giving). Students examine the characteristics of different varieties of English such as Singaporean English, Australian English for international communication, focusing on the relation of these varieties to cultural knowledge and pragmatics. Students practise information access strategies and use multimedia for their own language learning. They are exposed to a wide range of materials for teaching and engage in ongoing reflection on the activities that promote the teaching and learning of effective communication, and on their own processes in learning a foreign language (English).
