Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have an increased knowledge of the development of school music education practices in Australia; be able to identify and discuss the factors that have influenced this development; use historical research methods to explain an identified aspect of the development of school music in Australia.

Synopsis This subject examines the development of school music teaching in Australia. The development of both primary and secondary music curricula will be considered. The subject will cover the nineteenth and twentieth centuries with discussion of the differences and similarities in the different Australian colonies/states. The European background to the Australian situation will be considered. Methodological movements and curricular debates will also be discussed.

Assessment Student participation - One substantial piece of original research (6000 words): 100%
