Professor F A Rizvi

12 points - First semester - Distance

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to provide an account of the nature, size and reasons for the increasing international flow of students, especially in relation to those attending Australian universities, TAFE institutes and schools; develop an historical understanding of the policies of international education in Australia from their early form as programs of educational aid, to their market form as 'export of educational services', to their various current forms; become familiar with some of the current theories of globalisation and explore their utility in explaining developments of the policies and practices of international education in Australia; critically assess some of the issues surrounding competing definitions of internationalisation as they relate variously to curriculum, pedagogy and the organisation of education.

Synopsis Increasingly, flows of people, technologies, knowledges and cultures contribute to the processes of internationalisation and shape the context in which educators act. In recent years internationalisation has become a major feature of Australian education adding momentum to the flows of students, staff and courses across national boundaries. This subject examines a range of issues raised by the internationalisation of Australian education. It is structured around four modules which correspond to the four objectives of the subject. These modules provide students with an opportunity to identify the demographic patterns of student and staff movement and examine the history of Australian policies on international education since the Second World War. The subject also considers the emerging processes of globalisation and their implications for international education in terms of approaches to educational management, curriculum development, pedagogy and ultimately for future conceptions of education, for Australian culture and identity and for regional understanding.
