Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have developed an understanding of (1) the ways in which education (particularly schooling) influences the ways we understand femininity and masculinity; (2) the relationships between gender, class, race/ethnicity and education; (3) factors which inhibit and facilitate girls' positive experience of schooling; (4) aspects of feminist research; (5) relevant policy and curriculum; (6) the professional and ethical issues which are relevant to interventionist strategies developed in relation to education and gender.

Synopsis Within this subject, the role that education (particularly schooling) plays both in the construction and reconstruction of gender is explored. As a foundation for this exploration, concepts fundamental to feminism are examined. Feminist perspectives on education are presented especially as these relate to understanding the problems and creating the solutions. Attention is given to both femininity and masculinity and the ways in which these are constructed, represented and understood.

Assessment Development and presentation of a case (1000 words): 20% - Research paper(s) (1x5000 words or 2x2500 words): 80%
