Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to describe the nature of specific talents and procedures to identify them; be aware of the differing views of creativity and its assessment; be able to apply the process for developing a mentoring program; have an understanding of the needs, identification procedures and development of young (pre-school) gifted children; have an understanding of the needs and development of prodigies and children with exceptionally high intellectual potential; have an understanding of gifted children with learning disabilities in relation to their needs, assessment and appropriate programming procedures; be able to identify gifted girls and have an understanding of their needs in order for them to realise their potential; have an understanding of key issues in addressing the needs of gifted children with sensory or physical disabilities; be able to identify and cater for the needs of gifted underachievers; have an understanding of leadership development for the gifted; have an understanding of the social and emotional development of gifted children and strategies to support their individual needs.

Synopsis This subject is designed to extend teachers, psychologists and educational administrators' knowledge and understanding regarding the development and education of gifted learners through information and experience in the following areas: the nature of specific talents and procedures to identify these talents as well as the nature of creativity and its assessment. Students should gain an understanding of the variation between the special populations of the gifted in respect to their needs and development. Journal writing and the individual project/seminar paper based on student interest and readings will require students to reflect on their content and to share these reflections in group and class discussions.

Assessment A triple-entry notebook (recorded summaries and reflections on assigned readings) (4000 words): 35% - Individual project/ seminar paper (2500 words): 55% - Class participation: 10%
