Methods and practice of teaching drama

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have acquired an understanding of the place of drama in the secondary curriculum; a detailed knowledge of key curriculum documents, including the curriculum and standards framework (arts) document and the relevant VCE study designs; the ability to develop a relevant and meaningful drama program for secondary students at all levels; the ability to apply their knowledge of dramatic form and meaning to classroom settings; the capacity to cater for the needs of students in mixed-ability classrooms; a recognition of the value of kinaesthetic learning for students at all year levels.

Synopsis This subject will introduce students to current methods and theories in the teaching of drama at secondary level. Students will explore the applications of kinaesthetic learning across the key learning areas, focussing on drama as an art form, drama as personal development, and drama as a learning medium. Workshops in this subject will provide students with the necessary theoretical and practical information for them to develop the skills necessary for teaching drama in secondary schools. Students will be encouraged to apply their knowledge in practical situations, with a special focus on teaching round experiences.

Assessment A precondition for a pass in this method is a pass in practical teaching and 80% attendance at all workshops - Practical/performance task: 30% - Attendance at one performance (at least) and written analysis: 30% - Major assignment (3000 words): 40%
