Methods and practice of teaching technology

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have developed knowledge and understandings about appropriate teaching strategies for teaching and assessing technology in secondary schools; national and Victorian curriculum requirements for technology education; strategies to both introduce technology to a school and to overcome any problems that may be encountered in such an exercise; facilities (buildings and equipment) needed to support technology; support available to teachers of technology through professional associations and literature. Students should have developed skills of teaching and class management appropriate to the area of technology; designing and presenting projects as the major teaching and learning strategy for technology; devising, organising and implementing suitable programs of technology for each level of secondary schooling; devising and implementing procedures for assessing pupils' work in technology. Students should have developed attitudes in valuing technology as an important new area of learning; developed a commitment to the continued development and improvement of technology; developed both an instrumental and critical appreciation of technology.

Synopsis Students in this subject must be (a) graduates in technology, engineering, architecture, computing or applied science, or (b) graduates in another discipline with two years of technology, including at least a quarter of second year in technology. This method subject prepares students to teach technology at the VCE and other levels of secondary education. A program of technical skills is part of this course.

Assessment A precondition for a pass in this method is a pass in practice teaching and 80% attendance at all timetabled classes. A satisfactory level of achievement is also required for each of the following tasks - Program: 20% - Project: 20% - Discussions and Sessions: 20% - Portfolio: 40%
