Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have developed knowledge and understanding of historio-graphical issues in the study of the history of childhood together with the development of childhood during the period 1450 to the present with special reference to concepts of childhood over time in social, economic, religious, psychological, political and educational contexts.

Synopsis This subject will introduce students to the history of childhood 1450-present in a European and an Australian context and will introduce students to techniques of historical analysis. The main topics will be issues in the historiography of childhood; childhood in the late medieval period 1300-1450; the rise of individualism and the role of the child 1500-1700; the Industrial Revolution and the changing role of childhood 1760-1860; mass society and institutionalised childhood 1860-1900; ideology and childhood in the twentieth century.

Assessment Essay (1000 words): 20% - Book review (1000 words): 20% - Major assignment (2000 words): 60%
