Reading the research on education: social and policy analysis

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have gained an understanding of the conduct and purposes of educational research; developed skills to locate relevant research in education; developed techniques to critique and review research; used opportunities to examine the social and political contexts in which research is pursued and have come to appreciate the influences which these have on research.

Synopsis This subject will introduce students to the reading and analysis of and reflection on research in education and the ways in which research informs practice. The intention is for students to relate recent significant research to schooling within a social and policy framework. In addition students will be introduced to sources and to methods for locating research information.

Assessment Evaluation (2x500 words): 30% - Essay (1000 words): 20% - Review (2000 words): 50%
