Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to demonstrate understanding of the three main marine and coastal habitats on the temperate shores of southern Australia; a relatively detailed knowledge of these habitats; an understanding of the nature and scope of marine and coastal education; an awareness of the place of marine and coastal themes into a range of subjects and learning experiences; familiarity with a range of marine and coastal education teaching materials, approaches and facilities.
Synopsis This subject is a two-week summer school program that commences with a brief introduction to the three major habitats of Australia's southern shores. As well as on-campus lectures, tutorials and practical exercises, all students will be required to take part in a full-day excursion that takes in the three major marine and coastal habitats on the southern Mornington Peninsula (rocky shores, beaches and sand dunes, and sheltered shores). The remainder of the program will be devoted to the development of the curriculum components of marine and coastal education, with an emphasis on studies of temperate Australian shores. Students will be required to investigate and review a range of marine and coastal education curriculum materials and write a short curriculum unit based on one marine or coastal habitat.
