Foundations of early childhood education

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have developed knowledge and understanding of a range of theories that have influenced early childhood practices and curriculum today; acquired knowledge of the evolution of Australian early childhood services; identified the historical, political, social and cultural factors that have influenced these; demonstrated the ability to reflect on and discuss a variety of philosophical approaches to early childhood curriculum and practices.

Synopsis This subject will examine the theories of Froebel, Steiner, Montessori, McMillan, Isaacs, and others, and the influences, direct and indirect, they exert on early childhood education today. In addition, students will examine the development of early childhood services in Australia, with particular reference to the theories and societal factors which have shaped them. Philosophical approaches such as Reggio Emilia, and developmentally appropriate practices, will also be considered.

Assessment Fieldwork project (2500 words): 50% - Examination: 50%
