Educational practices: experiences of teaching and learning 1

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to locate their teaching 'stance' and practices in one or more paradigms within adult education; review the applicability of leadership and facilitation styles in their particular teaching contexts; implement a range of methods to create learning climates conducive to adult learning; develop an understanding of and demonstrate a range of adult teaching practices; and identify educational resources and materials to enhance their teaching practice.

Synopsis This subject will take up the diverse role of the adult educator and explore four key areas. (i) Leadership and facilitation in adult learning: the role of the adult educator will be theorised with reference to responsibilities and values their relationship to educational practices. Debates around leadership and facilitation will be introduced; (ii) Developing a conducive learning environment: students will focus on the importance of climate setting in adult learning environments and focus on the dynamics and development of working with groups and individuals; (iii) Effective methodologies in adult learning: a range of current teaching methodologies such as mentoring, coaching, action learning and more traditional teaching methods will be discussed and practised; (iv) Resource development to complement adult learning: opportunities to enhance adult learning through a range of resources and materials will be explored.

Assessment All tasks to be negotiated but written material equivalent to 4000 words - Critical report, reflective journal and portfolio development: 50% - Group presentation: 30% - Report: 20%
