Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to demonstrate an improved understanding of popular song in society and of musical concepts basic to popular musics in the world; demonstrate their improved ability to read music through participation in a keyboard workshop, a composition workshop and a popular music workshop; demonstrate an improved understanding of musical concepts in popular styles on a number of varied instruments including tuned handbells and classroom instruments; show a commitment to the co-operative nature of group performance.

Synopsis There are three components of this subject which are (1) the practical program as per EDP1305; (2) the composition workshop in which students produce a folio of several song tunes in a chosen style; and (3) the popular song workshop in which students are introduced to and perform a wide range of repertoire of popular song in various styles, both Western and non-Western.

Assessment Practical (keyboard and instrumental workshop): 60% - Composition folio: 20% - Class test: 20%
