Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should possess a general knowledge of the concepts, language and capabilities of computer systems; have developed user skills in relation to the operating system, common utilities, wordprocessing, databases, spreadsheets and drawing applications.

Synopsis This subject is designed to provide students with an introduction to significant computer characteristics and applications. Computer awareness: the development of a conceptual model of a computer system; hardware, software and their interrelationships. The processor: arithmetic and logic unit; control unit; memory; the flow of data. peripheral devices: types and capabilities. File management: storage and maintenance. Software: operating systems; system utilities; user applications - wordprocessing, databases, spreadsheets and drawing applications.

Assessment Practical exercises: 40% - Examination: 60%
