Creative music in the classroom

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have developed knowledge, understanding and expertise in the ideas and materials produced by John Paynter, George Self, Brian Dennis and R Murray Schafer; children improvising and composing in the classroom; repertoire of music written specifically for school children; the non-traditional methods of notating music; the classroom organisation of children's group compositional work; the assessment and evaluation of children's compositions; the rationale for implementation of a creative classroom music program; using any sound as the basis of a potential composition; using a range of sound sources as the basis of a composition; making aesthetic choices about sounds and their combination which confront composers.

Synopsis This subject aims to introduce students to recent approaches to creative classroom music as established by post-World War 2 music educationalists. Students will survey the ideas and materials produced by John Paynter, George Self, Brian Dennis and R Murray Schafer. Topics include composition in the classroom; improvisation; music written specially for children; non-traditional methods of notating music; the organisation of group work; the assessment and evaluation of children's composition and the implementation of creative music in the classroom.

Assessment Assessment will be based on student participation in group compositions and performances: 40% - Written material: 60%
