Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have developed an appreciation of the place of languages other than English (LOTE) in the primary school curriculum; an understanding of those processes that underlie second language development; and a commitment to supporting LOTE in the classroom.

Synopsis This subject provides a general rationale for the teaching of LOTE in primary schools and is intended to provide necessary background for all teachers. It covers Government language policy, describes current research in bilingualism, outlines methods for setting up a LOTE program, and examines various models for teaching LOTE in the primary school.

Assessment Two assignments (2500-3000 words each): 90% - Oral presentation: 10%
