Mathematics education 3

4 points - 2 hours per week - Second semester - Peninsula - Prerequisites: EDN1375 and EDN2375

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be thoroughly aware of all content areas outlined in Department of Education publications; be able to analyse errors made in computations and devise remediation resources to correct these errors; be aware of current issues and developments in the teaching of mathematics in the primary school; have developed techniques that link mathematics to practical applications; have furthered the understanding of measurement and developed strategies for its teaching.

Synopsis Areas of study include an analysis of computational errors and related remedial measures, gender issues, the application to technology, non-metric geometry, and a range of measurement topics. Development of an appreciation of the measurements and their derivations which are associated with two- and three-dimensional objects. The place that games have in the mathematics classroom and the application that mathematics has in the real world will be explored.
