Curriculum studies: Art and music

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should understand the three aspects of art appreciation identified in the curriculum standards framework (making, presenting and appreciating); complete a range of art activities in a variety of media; and have the ability to develop effective classroom art programs. Students should have developed their skills and understanding in music, their evaluative skills concerning music curriculum planning and their practical music skills on keyboards. Students should be able to plan, implement and evaluate an inquiry-based integrated learning strategies that engender thinking and to plan, implement and evaluate sequential and extended learning experiences in the primary school classroom. Students should have an understanding of current professional issues in education.

Synopsis This subject will address issues in art and music in primary schooling. The art and music components will reflect curriculum documents. The course provides guidance and workshops in art activities and art appreciation suitable for primary children. In the music component students will discuss rationales and program development and evaluation in music. Students will participate in workshops that explore classroom music making utilising a range of educational approaches. Students will develop their music keyboard skills. In teaching studies students will investigate and acquire skill and understanding in the use of a range of classroom teaching strategies that engender thinking. There will be a consideration of integrated approaches which will be applied during the practicum. Students will extend their evaluative and reflective teaching skills and develop an understanding of the role of the teacher in schooling.
