Curriculum studies: Physical Education and health education

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have acquired skills and understanding in physical education and personal development. Students should be able to develop, implement and evaluate physical education and health education programs in schools and will be familiar with National and State curricula in physical education. Students will have actively participated in physical education skill education programs and undertaken related programs dealing with professional issues. Students will have developed the skills of a competent beginning teacher with an understanding of current professional skills in education and will be able to plan, implement and evaluate sequential, extended learning programs in schools.

Synopsis This subject will address issues in physical education in primary schooling. Students will actively participate in a series of physical education skill acquisition programs. There will be a consideration of various educational policy and curriculum documents in physical education and the strategies necessary for their implementation. Evaluation and program planning in physical education will be undertaken with a focus on developing extended learning sequences and whole school programs. In teaching studies students will investigate and acquire skill and understanding in the use of a range of classroom teaching strategies that engender thinking. Students should be able to plan, implement and evaluate extended learning experiences in the primary school classroom. Students will extend their evaluative and reflective teaching skills and develop and understanding of the role of the teacher in schooling. Students should have an understanding of current professional issues in education.
