Swimming and Water Safety

6 points - 3 hours per week - Second Semester - Gippsland - Prerequisite(s) EDG 1301 or EDG 1501 or equivalent

Objectives At the completion of this subject, the students should have acquired knowledge of swimming and survival techniques, teaching sequences and development strategies in swimming and water safety and basic water rescue techniques. Developed skills of observation and able to analyse swimming technique, and to apply appropriate correction strategies, analyse techniques, to improve skill level, performance level and ability to demonstrate appropriate techniques.
Developed an appreciation of the importance of developing correct and efficient technique as a basis to swimming and water safety. Able to identify safety issues in swimming, survival and water safety, and an understanding of the organisation and practical logistics associated with aquatic programs.
Demonstrated an ability to perform a range of swimming and rescue skills.

Synopsis In this subject students will examine the current body of knowledge relating to swimming and the coaching of swimming and identifies the applications in a range of sports. Theoretical knowledge will include the teaching and learning of swimming, water safety, training methods and the physiology associated with aquatic activity. The subject will also focus on developing student's practical skills in these areas including stroke development, mechanical analysis of strokes, safety and rescue techniques forming part of the assessment. The students will have the opportunity to gain external qualifications (eg. Austswim, Pool Lifeguard or Surf Rescue).

Assessment Class tests: 60% - two 1000 word assignments 40% - Practical S/U
