Child Development

6 points - semesters 1 and 2 - Peninsula campus. Equivalent of 2 hours per week - No prerequisites.

Objectives: Upon successful completion of this subject students should have knowledge and understanding of the main theories of child development; the major developmental milestones in early and middle childhood and adolescence including cognitive, physical, social and emotional domains; individual differences and normal variation in development; current learning theories; principles and strategies for effective teaching; classroom management and communication; and the ability to reflect on and apply theories of learning and child development to their teaching practice as a basis for planning, teaching and evaluation; promoting positive behaviours, optimising children's learning; responding to group and individual needs.

Synopsis: This subject will focus on the development of children 0-12 years as well as adolescence, a range of theories of development and learning, and the implication for teaching practice in the primary school setting. There will be emphasis on the need for students to critically reflect on their understanding and knowledge of child development as a basis for identifying and responding to group and individual development and needs.

Assessment: A case study report, 2000 words: 40%; research assignment, 2000 words: 40%; class presentation: 20%
