Exploring mathematics

6 points - 2 hours per week - Peninsula campus - Semester two

Dr Barbara Clarke

Objectives: Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have developed an appreciation of the power of mathematics to solve problems in a range of contexts; have consolidated their knowledge and skills in number, measurement, chance and data, and geometry and be able to use a range of strategies to solve mathematical problems.

Synopsis: This subject is designed to build the competence and confidence of students in the discipline of mathematics. Students will explore a number of realistic situations in which the need for mathematical problem solving arises and will be expected to develop power to draw on and utilise personal skills and knowledge to enable them to solve mathematical problems. Content areas will include number, measurement, chance and data and geometry and involve the use of computers and calculators.

Assessment: A folio of completed group and individual problem solving tasks (equivalent to 1500 words) 30%; Written report of a mathematical investigation (1000 words) 20%; Examination of key course content (2 hours) 50%
