Objectives Upon successful completion of this
subject students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the main
components of music: pitch, tone, tempo, texture, dynamics and diversity of
musical styles; have developed an understanding of, and skills in various
untuned and tuned classroom instruments and in singing; have developed an
understanding of the use of music within listening, games, movement and
story-telling; be able to demonstrate an understanding of music as a tool to
promote learning within the curriculum; have developed strategies and resources
for planning and implementing appropriate experiences for children between
birth and age 8; and become familiar with the main tenets of various approaches
appropriate to early childhood music education including Kodaly, Orff and
Upbeat.
Synopsis This subject aims to provide students with a comprehensive
awareness of the theoretical and practical aspects of the role of music in
promoting learning and well-being within early childhood education. Students
will explore the use of singing, instruments and musical repertoire. In
addition, they will develop a folio of resources.
Assessment Class test: 20% Folio of exercises: 30% Practical test: 50%
