Dr B Clarke

6 points - 2 hours per week - Second Semester - Peninsula and Gippsland

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to provide a rationale for the inclusion of mathematics in the primary school curriculum; be aware of all content areas outlined in Department of Education publications; appreciate the importance of sorting, classifying and other early number activities appropriate to young children learning mathematics; have developed a sound approach to the teaching of the basic operations with whole numbers; have developed techniques that link mathematics to practical applications particularly in relation to measurement and space; be developing an understanding of the role of information technology in the mathematics classroom.

Synopsis This subject develops knowledge, skills and attitudes about teaching and learning in primary school mathematics. There will be a particular focus on children's mathematical development in early number concepts, written and mental computation, estimation, measurement and space. Students will explore a range of approaches to the teaching of mathematics including the use of information technology in the context of mathematics (eg., appropriate software, video, calculator use)

Assessment
Written report based on observation of mathematical tasks undertaken by children (2000 words): 40% -
