Aims

The course is offered to graduates who possess demonstrated numeracy skills. It aims to provide an education and training in methods used in the design, development and application of computer systems for the management of business operations. It may also allow graduates who are working in business or as computing professionals to enhance their knowledge and expertise in business related computing techniques and business procedures.
Students who complete the Graduate Diploma may apply for admission to the course work Master of Business Systems.
The Graduate Diploma in Business Systems is currently also offered as a full-time and part-time on-campus course by the School of Business Systems within the Faculty of Information Technology at the Clayton campus. It is possible to transfer between the distance education and on-campus modes.

Entry requirements

Normal entry requirement is a degree from a recognised university or an equivalent tertiary-level accredited award with related professional experience.
Special entry also exists where a limited number of candidates who do not qualify under the normal entry requirements may be allowed admission. These candidates will be expected to have some tertiary level education and significant relevant professional experience. Such candidates may be required to complete some additional bridging or preparatory courses.

English proficiency

When applying to enrol, international students must provide proof of English proficiency in accordance with the faculty policy.

PC requirements

All distance education students will need to have access to a personal computer with CD ROM drive, modem and printer.

Course structure

In the distance education mode the course is normally completed over two years at a 50 per cent study load.
The course consists of eight subjects involving the study of business-related computer techniques and business procedures, leading to an understanding of the design, operation and control of computer-based systems, with applications in business data processing, planning, scheduling, forecasting, production management, inventory management, project management, financial management, business modelling and operations management.
To qualify for the award of the graduate diploma all students must satisfactorily meet the objectives and assessment requirements of eight subjects selected from the following schedule:

Completed applications

Completed applications are to be forwarded to the student matters officer, Gippsland School of Computing and Information Technology, Monash University, Churchill, Victoria, 3842, by 18 September 1998 to be considered for a first-round offer. Applications received after that date, but before 30 November 1998, will be considered for a second round of offers. Later applications may be considered if places are available.
