Aims

The course is designed for those with tertiary qualifications in any discipline who wish to gain a first qualification in computing. It aims to provide students with recognised knowledge and skills in computer programming, information systems and information technology, and with practical knowledge of computer hardware and software which can be put to immediate use. It also aims to allow graduates who are working in the computing industry to enhance their knowledge and expertise, and keep pace with developments in this area.

Entry requirements

The normal entry requirement is a degree from a recognised university or college of advanced education; or an equivalent tertiary level accredited award in some area other than computing; or satisfactory completion of the Graduate Certificate in Computing offered by distance education from the Gippsland campus. Students entering the course with the graduate certificate are given credit for the four subjects completed in that course.
Special entry requirements exist where in any year, up to 10 per cent of admissions made may be granted to applicants who do not meet the above entrance requirements. Such admissions will be subject to the approval of the board of the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology, and candidates will be required to satisfy the following criteria: (i) at least two years in total, of tertiary-level courses and/or industry-level courses assessed as being at tertiary level; (ii) at least two years of relevant work experience.

Course structure

The Graduate Diploma in Computing is offered by distance education study, and is normally completed over two years.
The course consists of eight subjects covering computer programming, software design, information technology and information systems. All students will be required to have met the objectives and satisfied the assessment requirements of eight subjects as given in the following schedule:

Year one

Year two

In addition, one approved subject is selected from the graduate programs of the university. Approved subjects offered by distance education include the following:

With permission a third-level undergraduate computing elective may be chosen.

Special requirements

Students require good access to a computer (preferably an IBM PC or compatible) and a C++ compiler. Borland C++ is strongly recommended.

Details of subjects

Content descriptions for year-one subjects are the same as for the graduate certificate, and may be found under that course entry above.
Note that subject outlines for GCO7831 (Database management systems) and GCO7832 (Information systems 2) can be found in the Graduate Diploma in Business Systems section below.
